🌉 West Coast Test in San Jose

It was a long travel day west, so apologies for the later-than-usual Espresso this morning. Atlanta United is in California ahead of Saturday night’s matchup with the San Jose Earthquakes, a fixture that has historically delivered chaos in just about every form imaginable. Training Ground Notebook will be out later today, along with a special feature from Jarrett Smith diving into why this matchup so often tilts into the unpredictable.

From Tata Martino’s perspective, the focus this week has been clear: improve the buildup. After the opener in Cincinnati, he pushed back on the idea that Atlanta failed to create altogether, noting that the volume of chances was similar but the final decisions lacked clarity. He reiterated that attacking output is collective, not isolated to one forward, and that the team’s biggest area for growth right now is constructing play more cleanly under pressure. With only about 50 days together as a group, he framed this as part of a longer process, one that must stretch from February through December.

Alexey Miranchuk echoed that theme of movement and aggression. He explained that Tata wants the front three to avoid static, 1v1 isolation and instead rotate and move to force defenders into decisions. That can create better and more winnable 1v1 situations. Miranchuk, now fully healthy, said the team’s high press and defensive line stepping up were positives in Week 1, but emphasized the need to be decisive and aggressive when chances appear, especially on the road. For him, the mandate is simple: score, create, and make the difference.

The challenge in front of them is a San Jose side coming off a 3-0 opening weekend win over Sporting Kansas City. Under Bruce Arena, the Earthquakes showed the kind of direct width and crossing volume that has long defined Arena teams in MLS. They are comfortable pushing numbers wide, overloading flanks, and forcing defenses into repeated box entries. Atlanta will need sharper buildup to avoid being pinned back and clinical transition moments to punish the space San Jose can leave when fullbacks advance.

And then there’s a new wrinkle. Timo Werner has arrived in San Jose. He’s had limited training time (perhaps just today) and may only feature off the bench, but even in short bursts his pace changes defensive math. On a wide field at PayPal Park, against a team still fine-tuning its structure, that late-game variable is one to monitor closely.

Saturday night feels less like a routine early-season match and more like a measuring stick. Atlanta United is still constructing who it wants to be, will we see tangible progress from the loss in Cincinnati. San Jose already showed sharp edges in Week 1. On the West Coast, under the lights, the margins will matter.

Pregame coverage will start at 6:30pm on 92.9 The Game with Madison Crews and Jon Nelson, kickoff will be at 7:40pm from San Jose with Mike Conti and me live at PayPal Park.

🎟️ Road to the Final Is Set

The UEFA Champions League round of 16 is locked in and the bracket is mapped all the way to the final. That clarity always changes the tone of the tournament. It is no longer abstract knockout football. Clubs now know not only their next opponent, but the potential gauntlet ahead.

The headliners jump off the page. Paris Saint-Germain face Chelsea in a rematch of the Club World Cup final. Real Madrid and Manchester City meet again in what is becoming a modern European ritual. Bayer Leverkusen draw Arsenal, Newcastle United get Barcelona, and there is intrigue everywhere else across the bracket. Some clubs quietly preferred alternative opponents. Others see opportunity.

Optimism varies depending on perspective. Bayern Munich’s side of the draw looks navigable if they maintain their attacking consistency. Arsenal, perfect in the league phase, avoided City and Madrid until potentially later rounds and will feel confident about their route. Liverpool believe momentum can carry them. Chelsea know that beating PSG would reshape how the rest of Europe views them. Meanwhile, Madrid’s pedigree, 15 European titles, always travels with them, even if this current squad feels less vintage.

The individual stage is just as compelling. Erling Haaland remains the blunt instrument for City. Bukayo Saka continues to be Arsenal’s European tone-setter. Harry Kane is central to Bayern’s belief. And in Barcelona, the knockout spotlight once again feels built for Lamine Yamal.

As always, the Champions League will narrow quickly. Brackets that look kind in February can feel brutal by April. But the path is visible now. And that visibility changes everything.

🚀 MLS NEXT Pro Season Five Begins

Season five of MLS NEXT Pro kicks off Friday with 30 teams, continuing the league’s evolution as both a development engine and competitive proving ground. CT United FC joins Chattanooga FC and Carolina Core FC as the league’s three independent clubs, while nearly every MLS organization now operates a second team. Notably, San Jose Earthquakes II return to PayPal Park after two seasons competing as The Town FC in Moraga, reinforcing the direct pipeline between first and second teams.

The developmental pathway was on full display last season. Former U.S. men’s national team captain Michael Bradley led New York Red Bulls II to the 2025 MLS NEXT Pro Cup title in his first head coaching role, earning a swift promotion to the New York Red Bulls first team. In their 2026 MLS opener, two teenagers from that second-team environment, 16-year-old Adri Mehmeti and 17-year-old Matthew Dos Santos, started and contributed to a 2-1 win over Orlando City SC. The bridge between academy, MLS NEXT Pro, and MLS is no longer theoretical. It is active.

International impact is growing as well. Six MLS NEXT Pro players featured for the U.S. U-17 national team that qualified for this year’s World Cup in Qatar, including Malik Jakupovic of Philadelphia Union II, who scored eight goals in three games. The league continues to skew young: LAFC2 signed 15-year-old Lisandro Torres through 2028, while Tacoma Defiance added 14-year-old Cris Batiz, the youngest professional signing in Seattle Sounders history. Stanford freshman Tomo Allen also joins San Jose on a 2026 MLS NEXT Pro deal before transitioning to a Homegrown contract in 2027.

We’ll have radio coverage of Atlanta United 2 all season long, beginning Sunday on the road at New England. You can listen anytime at soccerdownhere.net/listen or on the Mixlr app as the next wave of talent begins another year of proving it belongs. Also, be on the lookout for features coming from the SDH team on 2’s manager Jose Silva and attacker Liam Butts ahead of Sunday’s match.

🏘️ Domestic Focus

Toronto FC Finally Land Josh Sargent
It took a long time, but Toronto FC have finally acquired Josh Sargent from Norwich City in a major transfer reportedly worth up to $27 million with add-ons. The USMNT striker will occupy a Designated Player slot after scoring 56 goals in 157 appearances for Norwich across the Premier League and Championship. The move ranks among the most expensive in MLS history and signals Toronto’s intent to rebuild its attack around a proven No. 9.

Cavan Sullivan Breaks Through in Champions Cup
Cavan Sullivan announced himself on the continental stage, scoring twice and adding two assists — including a clever backheel — in the Philadelphia Union’s 7-0 win over Defence Force FC in the Concacaf Champions Cup. At 16, he became the youngest American goalscorer in the competition’s history as the Union advanced 12-0 on aggregate. Next up is Club América in the round of 16, with Sullivan keeping perspective: “We are going to take it one step at a time.”

MLS Set for Champions Cup Round of 16
The CONCACAF Champions Cup Round of 16 is set, with multiple MLS sides advancing into the two-leg ties scheduled for March 10-12 and March 17-19. Key matchups include FC Cincinnati facing Tigres, LAFC meeting Alajuelense, LA Galaxy taking on Mount Pleasant, and Nashville SC squaring off with Inter Miami. Philadelphia Union draw Club América, while Vancouver Whitecaps FC and Seattle Sounders FC are set for an all-MLS clash.

With Liga MX opposition looming across much of the bracket, MLS clubs now enter the decisive stretch of continental play. Advancement would push teams into April’s quarterfinals and keep hopes alive for a spot in the May 30 final.

Aubrey Kingsbury Announces Pregnancy
Aubrey Kingsbury shared that she and her husband are expecting a baby in July, announcing the news on Washington Spirit social channels from the pitch at Audi Field. The two-time NWSL Goalkeeper of the Year and 2023 World Cup roster member will go on maternity leave, joining recent Spirit mothers Casey Krueger, Andi Sullivan and Ashley Hatch. Sandy MacIver and Kaylie Collins are expected to compete for the starting role as the club captain steps away from a team that has finished NWSL runner-up in back-to-back seasons.

Griezmann’s Future at Atleti in Question
Antoine Griezmann is reportedly edging closer to a move to Orlando City SC, with talks ongoing despite his contract at Atlético Madrid running through 2027. Diego Simeone admitted he “doesn’t know” if the forward will finish the season in Madrid, even as Griezmann remains central to Atlético’s LaLiga and Champions League ambitions. A potential farewell could come soon, with speculation intensifying ahead of key domestic and European fixtures.

St. Louis Secures Simon Becher
St. Louis City SC extended forward Simon Becher through June 2028, with an option for 2028-29. The 26-year-old has nine goals and six assists in 48 appearances since arriving from AC Horsens, providing movement and pressing energy in the final third. Originally drafted by Vancouver in 2022, Becher has carved out a steady role in St. Louis’ attacking group as the club continues building continuity.

Atlanta United’s new Spirit of ’96 Collection leans fully into the city’s Olympic legacy while complementing the club’s 2026 away kit. The lifestyle range features a refined palette of beige, cream, dark green, and gold, drawing a clear visual line back to Atlanta’s 1996 moment on the global stage. The entire SDH team has basically agreed that it is going to go broke because of this collection. For those of us who remember the imaging around the 1996 Olympics, it’s an awesome throwback.

The early extension signals confidence in a transition that, despite initial skepticism, has been steady and upward.

Manchester United’s Amorim Exit Cost
Manchester United disclosed that parting ways with head coach Ruben Amorim could cost up to £15.9 million in settlement payments, according to a financial filing. An additional £6.3 million relates to the cost of hiring him from Sporting Lisbon in 2024. The final payout may depend on Amorim’s next role, but the figures underline the financial impact of managerial turnover at Old Trafford.

With additional friendlies against Venezuela and Mexico scheduled, this stretch marks the first phase of a long-term plan aimed at peaking in 2027.
