🏆 Nashville Makes History at the Azteca as MLS Surges in the Champions Cup

There are results that matter, and then there are results that get remembered. Nashville SC's 1-0 win over Club América at the Estadio Azteca on Tuesday night is one of the second kind. The Boys in Gold became the first MLS club in history to win a competitive match at one of the most iconic and intimidating venues in world soccer, advancing to the Concacaf Champions Cup semifinals with a 1-0 aggregate victory after a scoreless draw in Tennessee last week.

Hany Mukhtar scored the winner in the 51st minute, which surprised no one who has watched Nashville this season. The captain got on the end of a Cristian Espinoza cross after Andy Nájar's long ball down the right split two Club América defenders. He buries that chance nine times out of ten. Brian Schwake made nine saves behind him and kept his sixth clean sheet of the Champions Cup run. That's not a fluke anymore.

LAFC also advanced on Tuesday, drawing 1-1 with defending champion Cruz Azul in Puebla to finish the series 4-1 on aggregate. Hugo Lloris made eight saves and Denis Bouanga scored a stoppage-time penalty to close it out. The bad news for LAFC is that Bouanga's first-half yellow means he misses the first leg of the semifinal. Five goals in six CCC matches and he'll be suspended for the most important one so far.

Two semifinal spots are still open tonight. LA Galaxy need to erase a 4-2 first-leg deficit against Toluca at home in Carson. Away goals from Gabriel Pec and Marco Reus keep them alive mathematically, and the Galaxy have not lost a Champions Cup series they finished on home soil. Seattle are in a tougher spot, down 2-0 to Tigres after being outshot 22-4 in Monterrey. The 2022 CCC champions need a completely different performance at Lumen Field.

MLS went into this quarterfinal window with four clubs. Two have already made their case. Tonight we find out how many make the semis.

⚽ Champions League Quarterfinals: PSG Through, Arsenal and Bayern Face Big Nights

PSG are in the Champions League semifinals for the second straight year, and once again their goalkeeper did the heavy lifting. Matvei Safonov was outstanding at a rain-soaked Anfield on Tuesday, making a series of crucial stops as Liverpool pushed for the goals they needed to overturn a 2-0 first-leg deficit. They never got them. Ousmane Dembélé added two late counterattack goals to close it out. Last season it was Donnarumma. Now it's Safonov, a 27-year-old who arrived from Krasnodar two years ago and told PSG on signing day he hadn't come to Paris to ride the bench. He wasn't kidding.

Atletico Madrid are already through and have been very publicly enjoying it. After eliminating Barcelona, the club spent Wednesday morning on X poking at Hansi Flick's grass complaints and posting a video of a lion with the Barça badge turning into a dog. Antoine Griezmann, who heads to MLS at the end of the season, said the club gave its fans a Champions League semifinal and a Copa del Rey final in the same week. Atletico hadn't been in the semis since 2017. They're back, and they have opinions about it.

Tonight Arsenal host Sporting CP at the Emirates holding a 1-0 lead from Lisbon, and it should be straightforward. It won't feel that way. Arsenal lost at home to Bournemouth at the weekend, got knocked out of the FA Cup by a second-division side, and Thierry Henry spent Tuesday on CBS explaining how Sporting could run the same press that gave Arsenal problems Saturday. Declan Rice is a fitness doubt. Saka and Timber are questionable. Arteta said his players are trying to do something the club hasn't done in 140 years. The math is still in their favor. The vibes are not.

Bayern host Madrid tonight with a 2-1 lead from the Bernabeu, and Madrid needs two goals in Munich. Bayern just put five past St. Pauli. Madrid drew with Girona on Friday, their third straight without a win, and sits nine points behind Barcelona in La Liga. Jude Bellingham said Tuesday he has been a "victim" of his own versatility, moved around by Xabi Alonso and then Arbeloa all season. Arbeloa said his team never gives up. They've got one leg left to show it.

🏟️ Atlanta United Heads to Finley for a U.S. Open Cup Test with Real Stakes

Tonight Atlanta United makes the short trip up I-75 to Finley Stadium for the U.S. Open Cup Third Round, and for one of these clubs the stakes are genuinely historic. Chattanooga FC have never hosted an MLS side in a competitive match. The furthest they have gone in this competition is the Third Round. Richard Dixon was CFC's captain the last time these clubs met in the Open Cup, a 6-0 loss at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in April 2022. Tonight he is in the technical area as Chattanooga's interim head coach.

Chattanooga arrive in strong form, unbeaten in five straight across all competitions and outscoring opponents 10-4. They dominated Columbus Crew II with 61% possession. They beat Orlando City B with 38%, winning on transitions and clinical finishing. Dixon has built a side that does not need the ball to be dangerous, which is exactly the kind of thing that gives Atlanta problems right now. The Five Stripes come in 1-5-1 in MLS, 0-3 away, and just fired 20 shots at Chicago without scoring. Alex McGrath leads CFC in goals and assists, and then there's Damien Barker John, 21, two goals Saturday, two-footed, cutting inside from the right at a pace Dixon says is nearly impossible to defend. Atlanta's center backs allowed three goals at home against Columbus two weeks ago.

The biggest question is Martino's lineup. He was vague about availability after Chicago, citing knocks from a physical game. If Miranchuk, Almirón, and Latte Lath (listed as questionable with a leg injury after requiring stitches from a challenge in the Chicago match) are all in, Atlanta have a quality ceiling Chattanooga probably can't match over 90 minutes. One more detail: Atlanta loanee Ashton Gordon turned 19 yesterday and could play for Chattanooga tonight against the club that holds his contract. He started an Open Cup match for Atlanta at 17. Happy birthday, Ashton.

First goal wins the night psychologically. Chattanooga score first and Finley goes loud and Atlanta are suddenly in an uncomfortable place. Atlanta score first and the quality gap becomes structural. Dixon's teams have shown they can win ugly. That matters tonight.

🗽 USWNT Streak Ends in Seattle, Series Heads to Colorado

The USWNT's 10-game win streak is over. Japan won 1-0 at Lumen Field on Tuesday night, Maika Hamano scoring the only goal in the 27th minute on a rainy evening in Seattle. It was just Japan's third win over the United States in 33 all-time meetings. The rubber match is Friday in Commerce City, Colorado.

Hamano's goal was the difference in a match the U.S. largely controlled. They held 67% possession, broke Japan's press consistently, and outshot the Nadeshiko 12-9. They just couldn't finish. Sophia Wilson had two close chances in the second half, including one cleared off the line after Trinity Rodman found her in front of goal. A stoppage-time volley from Heaps would have been dramatic, but she was offside. Tullis-Joyce, playing at her former home stadium, got fingertips to Hamano's shot and couldn't keep it out.

Hayes completely changed her starting lineup from San Jose, as she has done four times in her tenure. Tuesday's XI averaged 23.9 caps, less than half the experience of the group that won the opener. Sonnett was the most experienced starter with 115 caps; the other ten combined for 148. Tierna Davidson came on in the 65th minute for her first appearance since February 2025, 412 days removed from an ACL injury. The crowd of 36,128 set a record for the largest women's sporting event in Seattle history, topping the mark set at Megan Rapinoe's farewell.

Friday in Colorado, Hayes will presumably go back to her full-strength group. One loss doesn't erase what this team built over ten straight wins. But they'll need to show it Friday.

🏘️ Domestic Focus

Louisville City and Colorado Springs Pull U.S. Open Cup Upsets: Louisville City defeated Austin FC 2-1 Tuesday, with Sean Totsch and Tola Showunmi scoring six minutes apart in the first half. It was only LouCity's second Open Cup win over an MLS side, the first since 2018. Miami sits third in the Eastern Conference through seven rounds.

Columbus NWSL Bid Hits Turbulence: Efforts to bring an NWSL expansion team to Columbus have run into community opposition over plans to convert McCoy Park into a training facility. City council members say they were not informed of the park's role in the agreement until a recent hearing. Council president Shannon Hardin says he wants an amendment protecting green space for underserved youth, but has been told it may be this site or no team.

Omaha Stadium Moves Forward: The Omaha City Council unanimously approved $48 million in TIF funding for a new soccer stadium in the Millwork Commons area. The full project is valued at $330 million and will include retail, entertainment, and housing alongside the stadium. Union Omaha is still awaiting state approval of a turnback tax that would add another $25 million.
