⚽ Concacaf Champions Cup: Cruz Azul and Monterrey Open With Big Nights
Cruz Azul opened their Concacaf Champions Cup campaign with authority, cruising to a 3–0 first leg win over Vancouver FC in Langley. José Paradela struck first, Amaury Morales doubled the lead before halftime, and Agustín Palavecino added the third as the Liga MX side controlled the match from start to finish.
For Vancouver, it was a historic night as the club’s first appearance on the continental stage, but the gap in experience showed. They showed moments of ambition, yet Cruz Azul’s structure and efficiency left the Canadian Premier League side facing a daunting task in the return leg in Mexico.
In Guatemala, Monterrey were pushed hard by Xelajú and left with a 1–1 draw that keeps the tie open. Xelajú took the lead through Joffre Escobar and carried the energy of a passionate home crowd deep into the night, putting one of Mexico’s giants under real pressure.
Monterrey eventually found their lifeline late through Jesús “Tecatito” Corona, a goal that shifts the balance heading back to Mexico. Cruz Azul look firmly in control of their series, while Xelajú have already shown they will not go quietly in this tournament.
💦 New Hydration Break Rule Rolls Out in Libertadores and Sudamericana
CONMEBOL has introduced a mandatory hydration break in every Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana match this season. Under the new protocol, referees can stop play once in each half for up to 90 seconds to allow players to drink and rehydrate. This pause isn’t triggered by temperature or weather conditions and is spelled out in the updated competition manuals for 2026.
Unlike the traditional “refresh break” that was dependent on climate, this pause for rehydration applies uniformly across games, whether playing in heat or cool conditions. Teams are instructed to have their players stand near their technical areas while they rehydrate, but they must remain within the field of play.
Another notable aspect of the rule is that CONMEBOL has opened the door for broadcasters to bring cameras and microphones closer during these pauses. The intent is to enhance the viewing experience by capturing real-time interactions between coaches and players, a first for official CONMEBOL match coverage.
This change marks a shift toward formalizing short game stoppages that were previously niche or used only in extreme heat. It reflects a growing emphasis on player welfare and broadcast value, and mirrors similar trends seen in other competitions where structured breaks are becoming more common.
⚽ Cristiano Ronaldo, Al Nassr, and a Saudi Standoff
Cristiano Ronaldo’s time in Saudi Arabia has delivered exactly what the league wanted in terms of global attention, but the football side has not matched the hype. Despite scoring at an extraordinary rate, Al Nassr still have not delivered a league title, and that gap between profile and trophies is starting to matter more as Ronaldo nears the end of his career.
This week, the tension surfaced publicly when Ronaldo missed Al Nassr’s win over Al Riyadh, not through injury or illness, but seemingly as a protest. Reports point to frustration with the club’s winter transfer business, especially as the title race tightens and rivals like Al Hilal continue to flex their resources. Ronaldo believes the moment is there for a championship push, and he does not want inertia around him.
The situation raises bigger questions about what comes next. Ronaldo’s contract runs through 2027, but it includes a reported £44m release clause that could be activated this summer. At 41, an exit would be complicated financially and politically, yet the larger issue is clear: Ronaldo did not come to Saudi Arabia only to be a marketing symbol. He came to win, and the absence of a Pro League title would be an uncomfortable blank space in a career defined by collecting trophies everywhere he has played.
🦅 U17s Begin 2026 Concacaf World Cup Qualifying
The United States U17 Men’s National Team begins its qualifying campaign for the 2026 FIFA U17 World Cup later today in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, taking the first step toward a trip to Qatar this fall. They will face the hosts at 6pm, the game will be telecast on FS2. The Concacaf format puts heavy pressure on the group stage, with only group winners advancing, meaning there is little margin for error from the opening whistle.
Head coach Alex Aldaz has named a 21-player roster that blends top academy talent with familiar faces from recent youth cycles. One of the key names is Atlanta United 2 goalkeeper James Donaldson, who earns a place in the squad as part of a group expected to handle both the demands of qualification and the intensity of knockout-level stakes from day one.
The U.S. will open against St. Vincent and the Grenadines, then continue the group with matches against St. Kitts and Nevis and the Dominican Republic. With eight Concacaf spots available but only one ticket per group, the U17s know the mission is simple: take care of business early, build momentum, and secure a return to the global stage.
🏘️ Domestic Focus
Conmebol Exploring MLS and Liga MX Invitees
Conmebol is preparing plans to invite MLS and Liga MX clubs into the Copa Libertadores starting in 2027, with two spots per confederation split between invitation and sporting merit. The move would be aimed at expanding television and sponsorship value in the U.S. and Mexican markets, though past Mexican participation ended in 2016 amid scheduling strain and competitive friction.
Nashville SC Extends Andy Najar
Nashville SC have signed Andy Najar to a contract extension through 2026, with an option for 2027. The Honduran international was a major piece of Nashville’s 2025 success, earning MLS All-Star honors and helping deliver the club’s first trophy with a U.S. Open Cup title.
