⚽ Concacaf Champions Cup: San Diego Roars Back
San Diego FC opened their 2026 Concacaf Champions Cup campaign with a statement win, storming past Pumas UNAM 4–1 in Leg 1 at Snapdragon Stadium. The result leaves San Diego firmly in control heading into the return leg on Feb. 10 at Estadio Olímpico Universitario, carrying a three-goal cushion south of the border.
Pumas struck first in the 12th minute through a spectacular bicycle kick from Robert Morales, briefly quieting the crowd and rewarding an assertive opening spell. San Diego pushed back steadily, but the breakthrough didn’t arrive until after the hour mark.
That moment flipped the night. Manu Duah’s 69th-minute header leveled the match and opened the floodgates, as San Diego poured on four goals in a ruthless late surge. David Vazquez, Alex Mighten, and Luca Bombino all found the net as the hosts overwhelmed a Pumas side that struggled to regain its footing.
The big picture is clear. For a club making its Champions Cup debut, San Diego didn’t just survive the moment, they owned it. The job still must be finished in Mexico City, but with confidence high and momentum firmly in hand, this already feels like a continental arrival rather than a cautious introduction.
🟡⚽ Elsewhere in Champions Cup action, Club América edged C.D. Olimpia 2–1 on the road in Tegucigalpa. América struck early after the break through Víctor Dávila, and although Jorge Álvarez pulled Olimpia level with a fierce strike, Ramón Juárez’s late finish ultimately decided the tie in favor of the visitors. It gives América a slim advantage to take home for the second leg. Meanwhile, Forge FC and Tigres UANL battled to a 0–0 stalemate in Hamilton, Canada, in a cold, scoreless night that leaves that Round One series delicately poised heading into the return match.
🔵⚽ Still to come tonight in the Champions Cup, the focus shifts back to Central America and the Pacific Northwest. Xelajú MC host Monterrey in Guatemala, where Rayados will be expected to impose their depth and experience early in the series. Later, Vancouver FC welcome Cruz Azul, as the CPL side looks to make its home leg count against one of Mexico’s most accomplished continental competitors.
🔴🏆 Carabao Cup: Arsenal Dare to Dream
Arsenal are heading to Wembley after edging past Chelsea to book their place in the EFL Cup final. A tense, attritional second leg at the Emirates was settled deep into stoppage time, when Kai Havertz struck on the counter in the 97th minute to seal a 1–0 win on the night and a 4–2 aggregate victory. It was not pretty, but it was controlled and decisive.
This is Arsenal’s first major cup final in six years and only their second under Mikel Arteta. The context matters. Arsenal sit six points clear at the top of the Premier League, have won every Champions League match en route to the round of 16, and face third tier opposition in the FA Cup. Talk of a quadruple remains fanciful. English football has never allowed it. But February has arrived with Arsenal still alive and believing on every front.
Arteta has not reinvented his side. Instead, he has refined it. Summer additions like Martin Zubimendi have brought balance, Viktor Gyökeres has added presence even without prolific scoring, and Havertz’s return from injury is beginning to pay dividends. Arsenal may not overwhelm teams with volume, but they suffocate matches, waiting patiently for the moment to strike. That patience broke Chelsea, who faded late despite cautious setup changes.
Next comes a Wembley final on March 22 against either Manchester City or Newcastle United, followed by a defining stretch of the season. Arsenal will probably not win a quadruple. Nobody does. But after years of nearly, this version of Arteta’s Arsenal finally looks built to turn belief into something tangible.
⭐ MLS Watch: Loons in Line for James Rodríguez
Minnesota United are reportedly in advanced talks to sign Colombian superstar James Rodríguez ahead of the 2026 season, a move that would be one of the most eye-catching in league history. Sources close to the situation say Minnesota is working toward an agreement with the 34 year old playmaker, who has been a free agent since departing Club León in December and remains focused on preparing for the World Cup later this year.
Rodríguez’s résumé is staggering. He scored six goals to lead Colombia as the top scorer at the 2014 World Cup and was widely regarded as the best player at the 2024 Copa América in the United States, guiding his nation to the final against Argentina. His club career has taken him from Real Madrid and Bayern Munich to stops with Everton, São Paulo, Olympiacos, Rayo Vallecano and León. If the deal goes through, he will become the most globally recognized name ever to wear the Loons kit and would join a growing Colombian presence in Minnesota’s squad.
Minnesota finished fourth in the Western Conference in 2025 before bowing out to San Diego in the playoffs. The club has a relatively young MLS history, but has shown ambition in roster construction. A Rodríguez signing would not only boost Minnesota’s competitive profile but also deepen the league’s pattern of attracting established international stars as MLS builds toward the 2026 World Cup stage.

🔟 Argentina Watch: Newell’s Dreams of a Messi Homecoming
Newell’s Old Boys have outlined an ambitious long term plan to bring Lionel Messi back to Argentine football in 2027. Club officials confirmed the idea is being actively explored, though they emphasized there is no agreement in place and that any move would require careful coordination well beyond a standard transfer.
The proposal is being framed as a broader project rather than a simple return. Newell’s leadership has spoken about aligning the club, the city of Rosario, and Argentine football’s institutions to create the conditions for Messi to wear the rojinegro shirt in the first half of 2027. Conversations with Messi’s camp have taken place at an exploratory level, but the plan remains aspirational rather than imminent.
Messi, who began his youth career at Newell’s before moving to Barcelona, remains under contract with Inter Miami through 2028. Any return would depend on calendar logistics, contractual flexibility, and Messi’s own priorities late in his career. For now, it is a powerful idea more than a concrete deal, but one that continues to capture the imagination of Rosario and the wider Argentine game.

Botafogo at a Crossroads as Textor Seeks Approval and Clarity
Botafogo enter a decisive stretch off the field as majority owner John Textor pushes for approval of a proposed capital injection involving GDA Luma Capital and Hutton Capital. Textor has framed the plan as a necessary aporte to stabilize operations and support competitiveness, publicly praising the leadership of Botafogo Social for its cooperation as deliberations continue. The proposal, however, has drawn skepticism from critics who argue its structure more closely resembles a costly loan than a straightforward investment.
This week is widely viewed inside the club as pivotal. Approval from the associativo side is required before funds can be released, and the timing matters as Botafogo navigates court restrictions that have limited asset sales and compounded existing financial pressures. Those issues sit alongside a FIFA imposed transfer ban tied to unpaid fees to Atlanta United of $30 million, leaving the club constrained as it tries to plan for the season ahead.
The sporting impact is immediate. Botafogo are waiting for the transfer ban to be lifted before completing a deal for defender Marco Di Cesare from Racing Club, a move reported around €4 million that the club views as a priority reinforcement at center back. Whether Botafogo can translate Textor’s assurances into tangible stability now hinges on decisions expected in the coming days, with both roster building and longer term credibility in the balance.
Final Whistle
Across continents and competitions, the common thread today is timing. San Diego seized its moment in continental play, Arsenal continue to manage belief without letting it run ahead of structure, and clubs from Minnesota to Botafogo are learning that ambition only works when the foundations are secure. February rarely gives answers, but it always sharpens the questions, and this week made clear which clubs are prepared to live with them.
Back tomorrow with more espresso for y’all….
